Abstract

Paul Ricœur proposed a conception of subjectivity that challenges the Cartesian approach to the cogito. While he does not abandon the idea of the self, he understands it as being traversed by otherness, beginning with the body as the most intimate form of otherness. This perspective entails a reinterpretation of knowledge as an inextricable interweaving of constituent subjectivity and a constituted world. The present paper examines the implications of this conception for affectivity, understood as a form of revelation, with a particular focus on emotions. It highlights both the importance of emotions in decision-making – an aspect Ricœur himself partly underestimated – and their role in the transition to action. The analysis primarily concerns Freedom and Nature, the work in which Ricœur most comprehensively addresses the topic of emotions.
