IL CARATTERE DEI CARATTERI: SISTEMI DI CLASSIFICAZIONE E NUOVE TENDENZE NELLA TIPOGRAFIA

Abstract

This essay aims at considering the following questions concerning typographical “characters”: 1) questions of meaning, distinguishing between “typefaces” (short etymological route) and “typography” (common, specialized and international meaning); 2) Latin alphabet: uppercase and lowercase letters and numbers, fonts variants (shape and weight), along with a case of study, i.e. the first page of «The Times», 22 June 1815; 3) classifying typefaces: the classification of Thibeaudeau and the typefaces classification of Bringhurst; 4) the current crisis of typefaces classification systems.
