Gender stereotypes are strongly rooted in Italian schools, due to the use of sexual language, of textbooks not attentive to gender equality, and of teachers who are not trained to responsibly address the issue. This paper aims at analyzing the important initiatives relating to education for gender equality that, urged by the second wave of feminism, have been taken since 1970 to the present day, considering all obstacles and difficulties that still prevent a real transformation of the educational institutions in Italy.
