Abstract

Which boundary separates the meanings of “symbol” and “sign” in contemporary debate? Which perspective – semiotic, semantic, anthropological, ontological, metaphysical – actually fuels recent studies on the symbol and the sign? Is there any open perspective that still links the symbol to the sign? A definitive answer to these questions is still lacking: this essay tries to offer a redefinition of the notions of “symbol” on the one hand, and of “sign” on the other.
