Abstract

In this article, I examine why philosophy and anthropology converge with renewed urgency in the age of anthropogenic climate change. The Anthropocene, understood as the rupture where human and planetary histories collide, destabilizes the modern separation between nature and culture and challenges individual autonomy. Retracing the evolution of Homo sapiens, from cooperation to intersubjective worlds and modern liberation, I show how some species-specific traits have favoured unprecedented Earth system change. Drawing on Chakrabarty, Latour, Descola, and Hamilton, I propose a “fifth ontology” integrating necessity and freedom, reconnecting humans to planetary scales, and grounding responsibility for Earth’s habitability within limits.
