Abstract

This short essay retraces the intellectual experience of the French Jew Bernard Lazare (1865-1903), through his writings. From his involvement in the defence of Alfred Dreyfus to his adherence to Zionism, up until his decision to distance himself from it, his seemingly contradictory choices derive from the urgency to answer the question “who am I?” A question which is closely linked to the more far-reaching question: “who are the Jews?”; or rather: “who are we Jews?”.
