Abstract

Hume never develops the concept of character in any systematic way, but the following text maintains that this concept is very fruitful for giving a general interpretation of Hume’s «science of man». The character’s conceptual space in not the same of «personal identity» that Hume criticizes in Treatise’s book I. The character has a central part in morality and in social life and it is a methodological instrument to show the prevailing role of passions and sentiments in human nature.
